Guu Garden

I went here for a late dinner with R after a long day at work (on a weekend too!) I used to go to Guu a lot but I haven’t been back in awhile.

What I drank: Yuzu Collins – gin, yuzu syrup, lemon juice, and tonic ($6.50)

I picked this fruity drink because I knew I had to go back to work after. This drink had no alcohol taste which was just perfect.

What we ate: Tuna tataki – lightly seared tuna sashimi on sliced onines dressed with ponzu sauce, topped with scallion and garlic chips (Small size: $9.00)

This dish was pretty standard in taste and execution. The tuna was fresh and I liked the scallions on top!

What we ate: Bang Bang G Salad – Chicken breast, onion, cucumber and jelly fish salad with sesame dressing ($7.80)

I was so disappointed with this salad. I’ve had this before at Guu Otokomae and they do it so much better there. This salad was just limp and kind of sad.

What we ate: Salmon Oshi Sushi – a block shaped cajun seared sockeye salmon sushi topped with sliced onion and ponzu ($9.80)

I’m on a bit of an aburi oshi sushi kick these days, and so when I saw this I knew I had to try it. It was a pretty good version, but I still prefer the one at Yui Japanese Bistro for a similar price point.

What we ate: Gyu Tongue Chazuke – beef tongue steak on rice topped with green onion, nori, and wasabi served with side of kanto dashi stock ($6.80)

Chazuke is one of my favourite comfort foods, so I just had to order it when I saw it on the menu. The tongue was very tender and for the price this dish just can’t be beat!

Will I be back? Yes. I like this location because it’s not as loud and there is a lot of natural light coming in from all the windows. The service was alright, I’m pretty sure they forgot the chazuke because it came 30 minutes after everything else, but I was having a nice time chatting with R so I wasn’t too bothered.
